The Role of Town Mayor
The Mayor must be a serving Town Councillor, but should remain politically impartial in the discharge of their role.
The Ceremonial Role
The Mayor is the first citizen of the town and is the ceremonial civic head of the Council undertaking ceremonial duties in a way that upholds and enhances the status of the town and inspires civic pride.
The Constitutional Role
The Mayor is Chair of the Council, according to Local Government Act 1972, schedule 12, paragraph 5(1). The Mayor is elected at the Annual Meeting of the Council which is held in May each year. They chair Full Council meetings, summarising debate and facilitating the resolving of decisions. They maintain order at the meetings, listen to other member’s opinions and have an original plus a casting vote. They also work with the Town Clerk to ensure the Council is making legal decisions and is kept up to date and properly informed.
