Following the recent resignation of Town Councillor Kevin Mitchell, a casual vacancy has been declared in the office of Town Councillor for East Ward.

This is an opportunity to call for an election to the vacant office of town councillor.

Town Clerk, Ed Humphreys, adds  “Your town council, as part of a representative democracy, is composed of the people the community elects to make decisions locally, on its behalf and in its best interests. If you have ideas to help, make this community a better place to live, learn, work, or visit, and feel able to persuade others of their benefit over their cost, this is your opportunity. However, it’s important to recognise that this opportunity extends beyond simply calling for an election; it is an invitation to consider standing as a town councillor yourself.

The role involves working closely with others both inside and outside the council, engagement with members of the community, and making decisions collectively after debate in council or committee meetings.  It takes time, effort and cost. It is the chance to actively contribute to your town’s well-being, to represent the diverse voices within your community, and to work collaboratively towards a brighter future for all.”

An election will be held if within 14 working days of publication of the declaration, a request in writing for an election is given to the Deputy Returning Officer by TEN electors for the electoral area.

A request should be sent by letter / post to:

Deputy Returning Officer

Powys County Council
County Hall
Llandrindod Wells
Powys LD1 5LG

Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council would like to express its thanks to Kevin for the being prepared to stand for election, and accept elected office in March this year. Contributions to the common good of the town come in all sorts of ways, so we expect there will be other opportunities for your town council, councillors and Kevin to work together.
